Nestled in the heart of Port Stanley, Ontario, Schnortzy's Pottery has become a cherished name among handmade ceramics enthusiasts. The studio's journey began in 2015 when Christine Torres, an avid collector of handcrafted ceramics, took her first pottery class. This experience ignited a passion that has only deepened over the years. She reflects, "There are many lifetimes worth of learning in ceramics. I will continue to explore and enjoy this journey during the lifetime that is mine."

The name "Schnortzy's Pottery" holds a special significance. It's a heartfelt tribute to her late father, who affectionately called her "Schnortzy." Although he passed away before her pottery journey began, she believes he would have been her biggest supporter.

Beyond the studio, her commitment to animal welfare is evident. With a background in the veterinary field and extensive volunteer work, she often intertwines her love for animals with her pottery. This February, she's participating in the Art for Animals Fundraiser to raise funds for a new animal shelter in St. Thomas. She shares, "I have two great passions: animals and pottery."

Her creations are a vibrant reflection of her imagination, drawing inspiration from within. From whimsical, bright designs to classic negative space options - her sense of wonder and creativity are evident in every piece. Mugs, in particular, hold a special place in her heart. She describes the personal connection felt when choosing a mug for coffee or tea, likening it to sharing a moment with the artist. "It's a small yet important ritual that brings me great joy," she notes, hoping her customers experience the same.

Speaking from my own experience, I can't do anything but agree- Christine's mugs fit so perfectly in hand with a handle and rim on the thinner side for handmade pottery, also keeping the weight manageable for folks who might otherwise struggle to use pottery. Whether tea, coffee, or hot chocolate - the perfect fit is out there with Schnortzy's.

Community engagement has been pivotal for Schnortzy's Pottery. Participating in the GROW program offered space at the Caboose while her Port Stanley studio was under construction. This initiative provided invaluable exposure, connecting her with a diverse audience within Elgin County and beyond. She also actively participates in local markets, the Elgin County Studio Tour, and collaborates with businesses like The Art Emporium in Port Stanley.
