After almost eight years of business, Jazz The Brow Boss has officially moved into her new location with Leaf Medical & Cosmetic Clinic!

Jazz Staddon grew up in St. Thomas, and it definitely still feels like home. After finishing college, she worked at a hair salon in London while also juggling being a mother to a 6-ish year old, but it was a lot for the two of them. “[My son] was struggling in London. I didn’t have any friends there, he didn’t have any friends there,” Jazz explained. “Mentally [we] just felt lonely you know? I would drop him off at 8am in the morning and pick him up around 6:30pm at night, and then bedtime was in an hour, so it didn’t really feel like he had time with me. It was just time to come back to St. Thomas.”
When Jazz first came back to St. Thomas she began working at a local Tim Hortons, but found that her previous clients were unsure of what to do without her. “[They] were like I need to see you, and I’m like I don’t know, if you brought me a wax pot I guess I could do your brows on my kitchen floor,” Jazz laughed. “They said okay and I was like…oh, okay, really?” As Jazz’s clients began to buy all of her startup stuff, she started to do their eyebrows at her home (complete with her dog hanging out on their lap; a great bonus treatment if you ask us).

Eventually Jazz said that she decided to expand her knowledge in the brow world and branched out to brow tattoos, which is when she decided she officially needed a change of space. Although she no longer offers brow tattoos, Jazz is extremely grateful for all of the clients she met during that time, and for her supportive connections, including Limitless Tattoo, who helped connect her to some of their clients, family, and friends.
After about a year and a half with Limitless Tattoos, Jazz moved over to Purely Wicked, and then eventually to her own space. “It just all kept falling into place really, it’s how I’ve made a lot of decisions in my life,” Jazz said. “If things all line up, [I feel] it’s telling me I should probably do the thing.” In some ways it can be said that her new location opportunity worked out the same way. Jazz and Dr. Suzanne Leaf were mutual clients of one another, and while chatting Suzanne threw out the idea of Jazz joining her space. “She was like ‘just to put a bug in your ear, if you ever wanted to we’d love to have you’. I brought it up to my husband because I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” Jazz said with a smile. “I kind of thought it was like a well wishes thing, but then I just asked her if she was for real, and again the pieces just fell into place”.

In addition to the puzzle pieces falling into place, hard work, and building client relationships, Jazz also has the SBEC cheering her on. “I took a few different courses and applied for some grants as well, like the Starter Company Plus program,” said Jazz. “They’ve been there the whole way.”

Jazz has narrowed down her services even more in her new location, officially offering brow waxing, tinting, colour, lamination, and lash lifting. She has gone on to take numerous continuing learning courses so she can fully understand the science, chemistry, and care that goes into brow and lash products and services. “Part of my services is that I’m teaching people about their own eyebrows. So when people come to me, it’s not just about getting a service done,” Jazz explained. “Like yes, you are going to leave with awesome brows, but it’s more about that you will leave with an understanding of your brows; how to shape them yourself, how to tweeze them so you don’t over-tweeze, how often to do it, how to use makeup to help them in between appointments. It’s more of a life skill.”

Many of her clients have followed her from London to St. Thomas and beyond. Many are from Elgin County and London, and some even come from Toronto, British Columbia, and even the Northwest Territories once or twice a year. “It feels really cool that they met me when they lived here, but we still have a connection and they still come back and visit me,” Jazz said with a proud smile. “[My clients] are so encouraging and supportive. They are always asking me ‘can you offer this, can you do this’ - we’ll come to you no matter what.”

Jazz’s welcoming personality, bountiful knowledge, and inviting space make it easy to understand why her clients stick with her. “It’s really important to me that my clients feel they can come as they are,” Jazz explained. She wants everyone to feel welcome, and to not feel they need to apologize or feel intimidated. Haven’t had your brows done in a while? Hair wash day is tomorrow? Who cares says Jazz.
One of the things Jazz is most grateful for is being able to share so many different pieces and experiences of her clients lives. “I’ve had some clients since they were 11 years old. I got to do their high school makeup, and also do their makeup for college,” Jazz smiled fondly. “It’s things like that where I’m actually a part of these people’s lives, even if I only see them for 15 minutes, it’s still a connection with people.” Jazz truly loves and values her relationships with her clients, and the little touches in her space speak to that connection and trust. From labelled hooks for clients to choose from when they come in to signal if they want a talkative or quiet appointment, the care Jazz puts into her craft and clients speaks volumes. She also loves the freedom being a small business owner gives her to create those little touches and personalization's, and her clients love the care, passion, and work she puts into her work and space.
