 Across Elgin County there are seven area municipalities, which are home to many quaint and welcoming communities surrounded by farmers fields, Carolinian forests, and country living. Their downtowns are lined with historic brick buildings, many of which house beloved small businesses where locals can be found catching up with one another over a homemade meal, strolling down the main streets, and enjoying day-to-day life. The municipality of Dutton Dunwich is no exception, and this Sunday, May 31, marks the official opening of the Dutton Farmers Market from 9am-1pm. A scenic 30 minute drive from the heart of St. Thomas, the Dutton Farmers Market was born out of a simple but powerful idea three years ago. "Our community deserved a lively, welcoming space to connect, explore, and celebrate all things local," said Kristina Bell, Co-Chair of the Dutton Farmers Market. "We deserved a place where we can meet the farmers and growers behind our food, discover fresh and delicious flavours, and feel truly connected to where we live." Started by Dutton resident and current Co-Chair Kaitlyn Stoddart, the Dutton Farmers Market has blossomed into more than just a weekly market. It has transformed into a weekly meeting space which celebrates community, creativity, and local pride. It's become a Sunday morning destination where people can wander, linger, and laugh a little longer. A place where Dutton and West Elgin residents and visitors alike can catch up with neighbours, make new friends, learn something new, enjoy live music or interactive workshops, and soak in the joyful feeling of community. From May 31 to October 4 of the 2026 year, the Dutton Farmers Market sets up shop outside the Dutton Community Centre on Sundays from 9am to 1pm, filling the space with farm-fresh food, handcrafted goods, local growers and makers, and community love. "Everything sold at the market is locally made or grown, helping to support agriculture and small businesses in our region," Kristina explained. "We have a variety of vendors including farmers, bakers, food producers, artists and artisans. They offer fresh produce, meats, baked goods, breads, preserves, honey, syrup, handmade items, and so much more." Each year the market has grown, expanding to new vendors, free activities, live music, themed days, face painting, workshops, and more - all of which are posted each week through the Dutton Farmers Market Facebook and Instagram pages. But the Dutton Farmers Market isn't just about shopping. It's about creating a space where people feel welcome, connected, and a part of something bigger. The weekly market has blossomed into more than just a place to shop, it's become a celebration of community, creativity, and local pride for Dutton and West Elgin. It connects back to the true roots of farmers markets, which historically were community hubs for food, connection, and conversation. Farmers would travel into town to sell their goods. Community members would buy their fresh ingredients for their meals for the week from farmers they knew by name. Neighbours would linger in the market square socializing as children played. And the Dutton Farmers Market is reviving that history, creating those cherished memories, reconnecting neighbours, drawing in visitors, and bringing fresh, local food right to their tables. The heart behind the Dutton Farmers Market is what makes it special, and it can be felt each Sunday under the vendor tents. "At its core, the market is about connection," Kristina said with a proud smile. "It gives farmers, bakers, and makers the ability to meet their customers face-to-face, share their stories, and build real relationships around fresh, local food and handcrafted goods. It draws locals out each week, and welcomes visitors from surrounding areas, encouraging them not only to enjoy the market, but to explore everything our community has to offer - from local shops to nearby restaurants and parks." For Kristina and Kaitlyn, their team members Nicole, Debbie, Kimber, Wendy, Matt, Richard, Steph, Tricia, and their small but dedicated group of volunteers, the Dutton Farmers Market is not just a market. It's a Sunday tradition in the making, where every week offers something new to discover. Each week is filled with energy, excitement, and local love - from live music by local performers, art and gardening workshops, educational programming, kids' crafts, scavenger hunts, raffles, themed market days and more. Sundays at the Dutton Farmers Market are an experience, a destination, and a celebration of community which fosters a sense of local pride and support. "Having a fresh, local farmers' market in Dutton Dunwich means having a space where community life comes together naturally," Kristina explained. "It's become a part of people's weekly rhythm. Families return week after week, bringing their kids and grandkids to shop, spend time outdoors, play in the park, and enjoy the nearby walking trails. [The market] isn't just about buying food; it's about slowing down, connecting, and making memories." Sure, it can be challenging, but all of the balancing, coordinating, managing, organizing, and executing is worth all the hard work, long hours, and set up and tear down. "The market is truly a labour of love," Kristina said with a smile. "Everything you see each week is made possible by a small group of dedicated volunteers, and the support from the community and local sponsors is what keeps the market thriving and growing. Every visit makes a difference, whether you come to shop, listen to music, or just spend time with friends and family."  The community love and support is evident - from local businesses and organizations providing financial or in-kind donations and raffle items, to financial support from the Dutton Dunwich Economic Development Corporation and weekly returning customers - the impact the Dutton Farmers Market has had on its community is clear, and so is the need and desire for a local farmers market. In a community so intertwined with agriculture, the Dutton Farmers Market strives to support local families, farms, and small businesses, not just economically, but socially as well.
