Few things in life are as meaningful as photographs. They can transport us back in time, connect us to our heritage and ancestry, and bring forth waves of impactful feelings and memories. There is something special about holding a photograph that has been passed down through generations - feeling that connection and emotion is timeless. But what happens when photographs become damaged? How can you best preserve cherished photos and memories in the digital age? That's where Archival Imaging Services comes in to help. Opening in December of 2025, Archival Imaging Services grew out of a love for photographs and the stories they carry. Archival Imaging Services specializes in digitizing photographs, negatives, and slides, preserving memories with professional, quality care. From simple touch-ups like colour correction and dust removal, to advances restoration, including colouring black-and-white images and repairing extensive damage, they handle the entire process from start to finish with precision and respect for the original image. In addition to photo digitization and restoration, Archival Imaging Services also provides professional archival-quality printing, ensuring your prints are designed to be enjoyed for generations - up to 400 years. "I've always been drawn to old images - family albums, faded prints, damaged negatives - and the way they hold moments that can't be recreated," said owner Jonathan Mitchell. "Over time, I realized how easily these memories can be lost to age, damage, or simply being forgotten in boxes and drawers." What started as restoring and digitizing photos from family and friends quickly became something bigger and deeply meaningful. "Seeing the emotional reactions when someone gets back an image they thought was lost, or sees a restored photo of a loved one for the first time in years, made it clear that this work mattered." Speaking with Jonathan, his passion and care for his craft is evident. Each photograph is handled with the utmost care, and images are restored fully by hand, not through automated processes. "We take the time to respect the original look [of the photo] and the story behind it," he explained. "We focus on thoughtful, natural restoration, rather than over-editing. Every photograph that comes to us has a story behind it, and we treat it that way from the very beginning." Archival Imaging Services starts their process by carefully digitizing photographs, negatives, and slides using professional equipment that captures as much detail as possible while keeping the originals safe. From there, each image is reviewed and restored by hand. Every adjustment, from simple colour correction and dust removal to complex repairs or colourizing black-and-white photos is done thoughtfully and with respect for the original image. When it comes to printing, Archival Imaging Services uses archival, pigment-based inks and premium photo papers specifically chosen for their exceptional quality and longevity. "These materials allow us to create prints that are not only beautiful today, but are designed to last for generations," Jonathan explained. "We chose to offer these services because we believe that photographs are more than images - they're memories, connections, and pieces of personal history that can't be replaced. Helping people preserve, restore, and share those memories is what drives our work, and it's something we care deeply about." Having the privilege and trust to work on such delicate and important images is something that Jonathan doesn't take lightly. Each photograph, negative, or slide that comes to Archival Imaging Services is full of deep connection and meaning. "I started this business to help preserve those memories with care and respect, combining modern digital tools with a hands-on, detail-focused approach," he said. "We take our time, treat every photo with respect, and focus on preserving the memories behind them - not just making them look 'perfect'. At its core, Archival Imaging Services is about safeguarding personal history and making sure these images can be shared, enjoyed, and passed down for generations." Like many small business in St. Thomas and Elgin County, Archival Imaging Services has been embraced and encouraged by the community. Jonathan has found that our close-knit community with a lot of heart has supported him through encouragement, word-of-mouth recommendations, and a genuine interest in his work - something we are very #stthomasproud of. When the people in our community truly value small businesses and all their care and hard work, it shows, and it makes a difference in our community. We build connections, support one another, and encourage each other to keep going, keep learning, and keep getting better. Supporting local businesses like Archival Imaging Services has a big impact in our community. It keeps skill, care, and creativity alive, while keeping our local economy strong. "Through my business I help preserve local families' memories - photos that tell the stories of our community's history," Jonathan said proudly. "By restoring and sharing these images, I hope to strengthen connections between people, celebrate local stories, and keep those memories alive for generations." When the long hours hit and challenging restorations come in through the door, Jonathan doesn't worry - in fact, he finds motivation through the deep meaning held by each photo, negative, or slide. "Seeing someone reconnect with a memory they thought was lost, or finally being able to share an image of a loved one again, that's what makes my work incredibly rewarding," he said with a smile. "That emotional connection, and the trust people place in me with their memories, is what keeps me inspired and excited to keep doing this." Jonathan has also found support in the Elgin Business Resource Centre team when he first began thinking of becoming an entrepreneur. "They helped me organize my ideas and put together a formal business plan," he explained. "Their guidance made it much easier to structure my goals, clarify my vision, and create a solid foundation for my business." Along with reaching out to the Small Business Enterprise Centre and Elgin Business Resource teams for supports, when asked about advice for other entrepreneurs, Johnathan spoke from the heart. "Follow something you genuinely care about - something that matters to you," he said. "Take the time to learn your craft, be patient with yourself, and don't be afraid to start small and grow gradually. And most importantly, don't undervalue yourself or your work, charge what you are worth and trust that people will recognize the care and skill you put in."
