The Summer Company award is presented to the Summer Company student that has demonstrated personal growth and development, good business planning and positive financial trending in their business.
This summer Sydney Woodhouse started Country Canning. Sydney was the first Summer Company student to run a summer business while completing a summer co-op. This co-op program gives the student an amazing opportunity to gain co-operative education credits while also running their own business. The student will create a framework of the business they want to run and the objectives they intend to accomplish. This is a great marrying of two programs because the student, with the assistance of the Business Advisor completes a business plan to aide them in the starting and running of their business. Over the course of the summer the student runs their business, regularly meets with the Business Advisor, completes in class courses and logs of their time. These are reviewed by both the co-op teacher and business advisor to assist the student in reaching their objectives.
Sydney processes, preserves and cans local fruits and vegetables and then sells them at festivals, the Horton Street Market and KJ’s Bakery here in St. Thomas. Most notably she has excelled at creating partnerships with local businesses, specifically the farmers she buys her produce from. She focused on all locally grown produce, and really solidified her brand as a great example of the success that can come from buying and selling local.
Sydney is continuing her business and most recently, as a vendor at the Fall Festival at Family Flowers, she met a local realtor who inquired about gift baskets. She has created baskets that feature a combination of her canning products, flatware, tea, crackers, chocolates and cutting or stone board. Country Canning is still featured at KJs Bakery on Sunset Drive. She has been approached by Palmers Maple Syrup regarding her maple syrup flavoured jams and Peach Maple Jame and Maple Apple Butter. Country Canning continues to look for opportunities to get her products on the shelf and is approaching a shop regarding her amazing Cranberry Sauce and chutney for the upcoming Christmas season.
Through the Summer Company program, Sydney has developed cash flow management, sales and marketing, and production skills. These skills will undoubtedly stay with her as she continues her endeavor and completes her final year of high school.
